Unfolding the Box Unfolded
The motifs of a glass of water, reflections, distortions, and visual auras, which arise from recent series A Glass of Water and Macular Bursts, expand in this new work. Arrangements of reclaimed cardboard boxes–a utilitarian and ubiquitous material–are unfolded to new use as a canvas. The corrugated, irregular shapes, with scores, cuts, and damage, offer varied geometries in conversation with colors, layers, and patterns. Distorted visual perception is accepted and even celebrated. The paintings are then refolded into boxes, ready to ship, adding a new phase to the humble life of cardboard. Nothing is permanent; everything is both disposable and precious.
There is a poetry in the receipt of a lightweight empty box. The outside has a history of labels, graphics, and stains; the inside, expected to be blank, surprises. It is up to the recipient to complete the creative process and unfold the painting.
